Quilpo Leather Sling Chair

The Quilpo Lounge Chair (pronounced: KIL-poe) is an original design, hand crafted in solid wood and select Argentine saddle leather.

One continuous leather sling eliminates pressure points, and the frame gives just enough to help the leather spring back as you settle in.  The chair’s striking lines and finished back show well from any angle, but the most enjoyable perspective is from within: your hands on the silky finish of the polished hardwood frame, your body cradled in the  dynamic support of the sling.

The design is a bow to the european mid-century-modern masters while solidly couched in a Latin-American design tradition; dense and figured woods intersected by a generous sling of tanned full-grain leather.  Its curvilinear members meet, press and pull against each other at the service of the seated, it’s a pleasure to relax in and only gets better with age.

The Quilpo Lounge Chair’s wedged tusk tenon joinery is beautiful, and easy to assemble (a link to a how-to video is included).  This fascinating joint is one of the oldest known woodworking techniques. It’s a classic to both eastern and western schools of construction; examples have been found sealed for thousands of years in Egyptian tombs as well as other ancient structures from around the world.  Thanks to these joints, the chair is solid, yet surprisingly light and easily moved, shipped, and manoeuvred through hallways and doors.

Each chair is hand signed and numbered.  The Zoita wood that I use is a dense and heavy honey-colored hardwood.  It’s closed grain smoothness is stunning in a hand-rubbed oil finish.  The ottoman is a fantastic accessory – everyone loves to kick up their heels!
